ABOUT YOUR EYES

  1. WHAT ARE CATARACTS?

Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process. The lens inside the eye is quite clear in young people. As you age, the lens becomes cloudy and starts to obstruct your vision. People often complain of looking through a dirty window or that their glasses always seem dirty even when they are clear. If the cataracts get bad enough they can be removed by surgery and a new clear lens inserted.

  2. WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that tends to run in families. The most common form is a chronic increase in eye pressure that reduces your side vision. Early detection is the key to effective treatment. There are no obvious symptoms to glaucoma so we advise all patients over 40 years old to have a regular eye test including a glaucoma test every two years.

  3. WHY DO I HAVE TO GET MY EYES CHECKED IF I HAVE DIABETES?

Diabetes is a disease that can affect the small blood vessels at the back of the eye. It can cause the vessels to bleed and fluid to leak out. This can lead to permanent and irreversible loss of vision. If you have diabetes, you need to have regular eye checks to determine if these changes are happening in your eyes.

You should expect that we would use drops to dilate your pupils so that the retina and blood vessels can be inspected in detail. If there is a problem, your optometrist can refer you to an eye specialist for further assessment.

  4. WILL WEARING GLASSES MAKE MY EYES WORSE?

No. It is a common myth that wearing glasses will make your eyes worse. This is not the case. Glasses are designed to support the eyes while allowing them to continue to focus to the best of their ability. In some cases, glasses can actually make your eyes better.

  5. I HAVE A SPOT LIKE A SPIDERWEB OR SPEC IN MY VISION. WHAT DO I DO?

Spots or spider webs in your vision can be caused by a number of things. In most cases theses spots are quite harmless but some can be the warning signs of a serious problem. It is best to get it checked by your optometrist at your earliest possible convenience.

  6. I AM SEEING FLASHES OF LIGHT IN THE VISION OF ONE EYE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Flashes of light in your vision may be an indication of a problem at the back of the eye. It needs to be checked as soon as possible by your eye-care practitioner. I would regard any sudden change in the functioning of the eyes, (of one eye in particular) as suspicious until proven otherwise. See your optometrist or ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
